Appointed as a judge in 1985, he served in both the District Court and the High Court before briefly practicing as an attorney. He worked as a Justice of the Supreme Court from 2005 to 2011.

After completing his term as a Supreme Court Justice, he taught Civil Procedure Law as a full-time professor and chair professor at Inha University Law School and Jeonbuk National University Law School. In 2020, he received the Korean Legal Culture Award from the Korean Bar Association. He has also served as the Chair of the Public Service Ethics Committee, outside director of KB Kookmin Card Co., Ltd, and the Chair of a public interest corporation.

Since 2023, he has been working as a Senior Legal Counsel at ClassHankyul, primarily handling litigation for Supreme Court appeals.
